About This Grass
Forms a moderately coarse, upright, and dense turf. Reaches 2 to 4 feet if unmowed, but maintained at 2 to 3.5 inches for lawns. Displays a medium to dark green color and maintains its color longer into winter than many other cool-season grasses. Seed heads are open panicles appearing in late spring.
Blade Characteristics
Blades are medium-coarse in width (4-6 mm), flat with prominent parallel veins on the upper surface, and possess a distinct keel underneath. Tips are pointed rather than boat-shaped. Vernation is rolled in the bud. The auricles are blunt or absent, and the ligule is a very short, membranous collar.
Root System
Deep, extensive fibrous root system going down 2 to 3 feet or more. Low to moderate thatch tendency. Establishes relatively quickly from seed. Deep roots provide excellent drought tolerance compared to other cool-season grasses.

Origin Region
Native to Europe and parts of North Africa and Asia. Widely cultivated throughout the United States, especially in the transition zone and northern regions.
Growth Habit
Bunch-type grass (clump-forming), though modern turf-type varieties can have very short rhizomes, forming a moderately dense turf rather than aggressively spreading mats.
Sunlight & Water Needs
Performs best in full sun but has better shade tolerance than Kentucky Bluegrass or perennial ryegrass. Requires moderate watering once established; high drought tolerance due to deep root system. Prefers well-drained loamy soils with a pH of 5.5 to 6.5.
Mowing & Maintenance
Ideal mowing height is 2.5 to 3.5 inches. Mow weekly during active spring and fall growth. Requires moderate fertilization (2-4 lbs N per 1000 sq ft annually). Needs occasional core aeration and overseeding in bare spots. Overall maintenance level is Medium.
