About This Grass
Tall fescue forms a moderately dense, upright sward with a coarse to medium texture. When unmowed, it can reach heights of 2 to 4 feet, but when maintained as a lawn it is kept much lower. It features a rich medium-to-dark green color that persists well into late autumn and early winter. Seed heads are open, branching panicles.
Blade Characteristics
Blades are medium-to-coarse in width (4-8mm), flat with prominent parallel veins on the upper surface, and feature a pointed tip. The vernation is rolled in the bud. It has a membranous ligule, small or absent auricles, and a distinct, broad collar region.
Root System
Features a deep, extensive fibrous root system that can extend several feet into the soil profile. It has a moderate establishment speed, forms low thatch, and its deep roots grant it superior drought tolerance compared to many other cool-season turf grasses.
