About This Grass
Tall Fescue is a robust, bunch-forming cool-season grass with coarse texture and deep green color. Unmowed, it can reach heights of 2 to 4 feet with open, panicle-type seed heads. In the image, it is seen growing underneath solar panels under semi-managed conditions, showing drought stress and stubble from previous management.
Blade Characteristics
Blades are medium to coarse in width (4-8mm), flat with prominent parallel veins on the upper surface and a smooth lower surface, pointed tips, rolled vernation in the bud, a distinct membranous ligule, and prominent claw-like auricles that clasp the stem.
Root System
Deep fibrous root system going down several feet, providing exceptional drought tolerance and stability. Low to moderate thatch tendency, establishes relatively quickly from seed and forms a tough, durable sod.
