About This Grass
Forms a moderately dense, coarse-textured bunch-type turf. Mower-maintained heights typically range from 2 to 3.5 inches, while unmowed plants can reach 2 to 4 feet tall with open, panicle-style seed heads. Color is medium to dark green with good heat tolerance relative to other cool-season grasses.
Blade Characteristics
Coarse texture (width generally 4-8mm), flat shape with prominent parallel veins and a shiny underside. Tip is sharply pointed. Vernation is rolled in the bud. Ligule is a short membrane, and auricles are typically absent or very blunt.
Root System
Deep, extensive fibrous root system going down several feet, providing superior drought tolerance compared to most other cool-season turfgrasses. Establishes relatively quickly from seed but tends to have low thatch-forming tendencies.
