About This Grass
Tall Fescue is a coarse-textured, deep-green turfgrass forming upright, dense tufts. Unmowed, it can reach heights of 2 to 4 feet, but when maintained as a lawn it is kept at 2 to 3 inches. It has excellent heat and drought tolerance compared to other cool-season grasses.
Blade Characteristics
Blades are medium-to-coarse in width (4-6 mm), flat, with pointed tips and prominent parallel veins giving a ribbed upper surface. Vernation is rolled in the bud. Ligule is a short membrane, and auricles are absent (though sometimes appear claw-like due to clasping collar extensions).
Root System
Deep, extensive fibrous root system reaching down 2 to 3 feet or more, allowing excellent drought resistance and moderate wear recovery. Establishes relatively quickly from seed compared to Kentucky bluegrass.
