Tall Fescue
Festuca arundinacea (syn. Schedonorus arundinaceus) · Cool-season perennial (C3)

Grass Family
Poaceae, Pooideae, Tribe Poeae
Grass Category
Lawn/Turf, Pasture, and Erosion Control
Variety / Cultivar
Turf-type Tall Fescue (TTTF); specifically closely resembles a dwarf-growth habit cultivar commonly used in transition zone home lawns.
Hardiness Zones
USDA Hardiness Zones 4-7; has high heat tolerance for cool-season grass but can struggle in extreme Zone 8+ heat without irrigation.
About This Grass
A coarse to medium-textured, deep-rooted grass forming dense clumps. It maintains a dark green color throughout the growing season and stays green longer into winter than most warm-season grasses. It reaches 2-4 feet if unmowed, producing a panicle seed head.
Blade Characteristics
Coarse blade width (5-10mm), flat shape with a distinctly pointed tip. Color is dark green with prominent longitudinal veins on the upper surface and a dull underside. Vernation is rolled in the bud. Ligule is short and membranous/fringed; auricles are small or absent (short-pubescent).
Root System
Deep, fibrous root system extending 2-3 feet or more. Low thatch tendency due to bunching habit. Establishment speed is moderate (faster than bluegrass but slower than ryegrass), providing excellent drought resistance once established.
Growing Information
Origin Region
Europe and Northern Africa; widely naturalized across North America, particularly in the transition zone.
Growth Habit
Bunch-type (clump-forming); lacks significant rhizomes or stolons, spreading primarily through tillering which creates distinct clusters.
Sunlight & Water Needs
Full sun to partial shade (requires at least 4-6 hours of sun). Moderate water needs but high drought tolerance for a cool-season grass. Prefers well-drained soils with a pH of 5.5 to 7.0.
Mowing & Maintenance
Ideal mowing height is 3.0-4.0 inches to maintain root depth. Frequent mowing is required during spring/fall. Fertilization: 2-4 lbs N/1000 sq ft/year. Requires periodic overseeding to fill in thinned clumps since it does not spread laterally.
Special Characteristics
Excellent wear tolerance and traffic resistance. Good resistance to Brown Patch and Leaf Spot in improved cultivars. High drought recovery and moderate shade tolerance compared to other cool-season turf grasses.
Ecological Information
Introduced species; useful for soil stabilization on slopes due to deep roots. Provides low-quality wildlife cover in pasture settings. Can be invasive in native prairie restorations due to its competitive nature and fungal endophytes that improve survival.
