About This Grass
A fine to medium-textured, dense cool-season bunch grass known for its rapid germination and establishment. Features a rich, glossy green color with shiny undersides of leaves. Height ranges from 1.5 to 2.5 inches when maintained, and can reach up to 18-24 inches if unmowed. Produces spiked inflorescences at maturity.
Blade Characteristics
Medium width (2-4mm), flat shape, pointed tips, glossy dark green on top with very shiny undersides, rolled in the bud (vernation). Features prominent parallel veins on the upper surface. Ligule is a short membrane, auricles are small and clasping (claw-like), and the collar is broad and continuous.
Root System
Fibrous root system with moderate depth (typically 6-12 inches). Does not produce rhizomes or stolons, relying solely on tillering for spread. Moderate to high thatch-forming tendency under high fertility, and exceptionally rapid establishment speed from seed.

Sunlight & Water Needs

Fairly low drought tolerance compared to tall fescue, entering dormancy during prolonged dry spells. Prefers well-drained loamy soils with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0.
Mowing & Maintenance
Ideal mowing height is 1.5 to 2.5 inches using sharp mower blades to prevent tearing the fibrous leaf tips. Requires regular mowing frequency (1-2 times per week during peak growth). Fertilization needs are moderate to high (3-4 lbs N per 1000 sq ft per year). Requires periodic dethatching and aeration. High maintenance level.
