About This Grass
Forms a dense, moderately coarse-textured turf with an upright growth habit. Color ranges from medium to dark green. When unmowed, it can grow up to 2 to 4 feet tall, but when maintained as a lawn, it forms a uniform, dense canopy. Produces an open panicle seed head at maturity.
Blade Characteristics
Blades are medium-to-coarse in width (typically 4-8mm), flat with prominent parallel veins on the upper surface and a shiny underside. Tip is pointed. Vernation is rolled in the bud. Ligule is a very short membrane, and auricles are absent or blunt/rounded.
Root System
Deep, extensive fibrous root system reaching down 2 to 3 feet or more, contributing to superior drought tolerance. Moderate-to-fast establishment from seed. Forms a moderately dense sod but can develop slight thatch under high fertilization.

Sunlight & Water Needs

Mowing & Maintenance
Ideal mowing height is 2.5 to 4 inches. Mowing frequency is regular during active spring and fall growth periods. Fertilization needs are moderate (2 to 4 lbs N per 1000 sq ft per year). Requires occasional overseeding to fill in thin spots since it is a bunch-type grass. Medium maintenance level.
Special Characteristics
High traffic and wear tolerance, excellent drought and heat tolerance compared to other cool-season grasses, good shade tolerance, and good resistance to many common turf diseases. Recovers well from wear and possesses deep-root erosion control capabilities.
