Tall Fescue
Festuca arundinacea (syn. Schedonorus arundinaceus) · Cool-season, Perennial, C3 physiological pathway; highly adapted for Transition Zone climates.

Grass Family
Poaceae, subfamily Pooideae, tribe Poeae
Grass Category
Lawn/Turf Grass, Sports Turf, Erosion Control, and Pasture Forage.
Variety / Cultivar
Turf-Type Tall Fescue (TTTF); common varieties include 'Falcon IV', 'Rebel', or 'Titan'. Higher density and finer leaf than 'Kentucky 31' forage type.
Hardiness Zones
USDA Zones 4 through 7 (thrives in Zone 6-7). High heat tolerance for a cool-season grass; good cold hardiness but may go dormant/brown during extreme winter or summer stress.
About This Grass
A robust, hardy grass forming dense clumps. It maintains a deep green color year-round in moderate climates. Unmowed, it can reach 2-4 feet with an open panicle seed head; as turf, it exhibits a uniform, upright growth with a coarse to medium-fine texture.
Blade Characteristics
Medium-coarse blade (3-5mm), flat shape, pointed tip with sharp, serrated margins. Dark green color. Vernation is rolled in the bud. Ligule is short, membranous, and truncate; auricles are small, blunt, and short-pubescent (hairy). Prominent veins on the upper surface with a glossy underside.
Root System
Deep fibrous root system (often reaching 2-3 feet deep), giving it superior drought tolerance. Low thatch-former. Moderate establishment speed from seed; forms a dense sod but lacks rapid self-repair due to bunch habit.
Growing Information
Origin Region
Native to Europe, North Africa, and Temperate Asia; now ubiquitous across North America, specifically the U.S. Transition Zone and Northern regions.
Growth Habit
Bunch-type (clumping), though some modern cultivars are 'Rhizomatous Tall Fescues' (RTF) with very short, limited underground spreading capability.
Sunlight & Water Needs
Prefers full sun but has the best shade tolerance among cool-season grasses (4-6 hours direct sun). Moderate water needs; excellent drought avoidance due to deep roots. Prefers well-drained soil with pH 5.5 to 7.5.
Mowing & Maintenance
Ideal mowing height is 2.5 to 4.0 inches. Higher cuts promote deeper roots. Requires 2-4 lbs of Nitrogen per 1000 sq ft annually, primarily in fall. Low to medium maintenance level; does not require frequent dethatching.
Special Characteristics
High wear/traffic tolerance. Good resistance to leaf spot and dollar spot, though susceptible to Brown Patch in humid summers. High salt tolerance and excellent ability to crowd out weeds when kept thick.
Ecological Information
Introduced/Naturalized in North America. Provides erosion control on slopes. Low wildlife food value compared to native grasses but provides cover. Often mixed with Kentucky Bluegrass (typically 90/10 ratio) to improve self-repair capabilities.
