Tall Fescue

Festuca arundinacea (syn. Schedonorus arundinaceus) · Cool-season, Perennial, C3 carbon fixation pathway; excellent heat tolerance for a cool-season grass.

Tall Fescue

Grass Family

Poaceae, subfamily Pooideae, tribe Poeae

Grass Category

Lawn/Turf Grass, also used for Pastures and Erosion Control.

Variety / Cultivar

Turf-Type Tall Fescue (TTTF) cultivar mixture (likely containing varieties like 'Rebel', 'Titan', or 'Monarch'). These cultivars are bred for shorter height and narrower blades than original 'Kentucky 31'.

Hardiness Zones

USDA Hardiness Zones 4-7. Known for exceptional heat and cold tolerance within the transition zone where other cool-season grasses fail.

About This Grass

A robust, deep green, cool-season grass with a dense, coarse-to-medium texture. It forms tight clumps and remains green throughout much of the year, including during mild winters. The seed head is a branched panicle, though rarely seen in maintained lawns.

Blade Characteristics

Blade width is medium to coarse (3mm-7mm); blades are flat with a prominent midrib and distinct longitudinal veins on the upper surface. The tips are sharply pointed. Vernation is rolled in the bud. The ligule is a short, blunt membrane, and auricles are typically small, rounded, and fringe-haired (ciliate).

Root System

Strongly fibrous and impressively deep (reaching 2-3 feet or more), allowing for superior drought resistance. It produces little thatch compared to stoloniferous grasses. Establishment is relatively fast from seed.

Growing Information

Origin Region

Native to Europe and North Africa; widely naturalized in North America, particularly in the U.S. Transition Zone and northern regions.

Growth Habit

Predominantly bunch-type (caespitose), though modern turf-type cultivars may exhibit limited short rhizomes for minimal spreading. It is slow to recover from bare spots compared to Kentucky Bluegrass.

Sunlight & Water Needs

Adapts to full sun and moderate shade (best shade tolerance among common cool-season turf grasses). Requires 4-6 hours of sun. Moderate water needs, but highly drought-tolerant due to deep roots. Prefers well-drained soil with a pH of 5.5 to 7.5.

Mowing & Maintenance

Ideal mowing height is 3.0 to 4.0 inches. Higher cuts promote deeper roots. Requires fertilization of 2-4 lbs Nitrogen per 1000 sq ft per year. Low to medium maintenance; periodic overseeding is necessary as it doesn't self-repair.

Special Characteristics

High wear tolerance for foot traffic; resistant to Brown Patch (Rhizoctonia) in newer cultivars. Good salt tolerance and excellent ability to stay green during summer heat stress without going into early dormancy.

Ecological Information

Introduced in the US; serves as important forage for livestock (though some varieties contain endophytes). Provides soil stabilization for slopes. Often blended with 5-10% Kentucky Bluegrass to fill in gaps and improve sod strength.
