Lolium perenne L. · Cool-season, Perennial, C3 grass

Grass Family
Poaceae, Subfamily Pooideae, Tribe Poeae
Grass Category
Lawn/Turf Grass, Sports Turf, Pasture, Erosion Control
Variety / Cultivar
Common Perennial Ryegrass (Turf-type)
Hardiness Zones
USDA Zones 5-7 (can survive in 3-4 with snow cover). High heat sensitivity; often used as a winter over-seed in the southern US.
About This Grass
A fine-to-medium textured grass known for its dark green color and glossy leaf undersides. It grows rapidly from seed and produces a luminous, upright growth habit. While it does not produce rhizomes or stolons, its high density provides a lush carpet appearance.
Blade Characteristics
Blades are 2-4mm wide, folded in the bud (vernation). The tip is pointed. The upper surface is dull with visible ridges, while the underside is notably smooth, glossy, and shiny. Ligule is short and membranous; auricles are small, narrow, and semi-clasping.
Root System
Fibrous and relatively shallow (usually top 6-12 inches). It establishes faster than almost any other cool-season grass but has low thatch accumulation due to its bunch-type habit.
Growing Information
Origin Region
Native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa; naturalized throughout North America and cool temperate regions worldwide.
Growth Habit
Bunch-type (clump-forming); non-spreading but very fast growing with a high tillering rate that creates a dense mat.
Sunlight & Water Needs
Prefers full sun (at least 6 hours) but tolerates light shade. Requires frequent watering to maintain color as it has moderate to low drought tolerance compared to fescues.
Mowing & Maintenance
Ideal height 1.5-2.5 inches. Requires frequent mowing due to fast growth. High fertilizer needs (3-5 lbs N per 1000 sq ft per year). Maintenance level is medium-high.
Special Characteristics
Excellent wear tolerance for foot traffic; very high germination speed (5-7 days). Susceptible to Gray Leaf Spot and Dollar Spot. Poor heat and drought recovery but crowds out weeds quickly through rapid emergence.
Ecological Information
Introduced species; high forage value for livestock. Used for quick soil stabilization on slopes. Often blended with Kentucky Bluegrass or Fine Fescue to provide immediate cover.
