About This Grass
Tall Fescue is a robust, bunch-forming cool-season grass known for its deep root system and excellent heat and drought tolerance compared to other cool-season grasses. Maintains an upright growth habit, reaching heights of 2 to 4 feet if unmowed, but forms a uniform turf when maintained at 2 to 3 inches. Color is medium to dark green with good wear resistance and a medium-coarse texture.
Blade Characteristics
Blades are medium-coarse in width (4-8 mm), flat with prominent parallel veins on the upper surface and a shiny underside. Tips are sharply pointed. Vernation is rolled in the bud. Ligule is a very short, membranous collar. Auricles are absent.
Root System
Extremely deep root system, often penetrating 2 to 3 feet or more into the soil profile. Fibrous with occasional short rhizomes. Moderate thatch tendency, fast establishment from seed, excellent drought avoidance due to deep roots.
