About This Grass
Tall fescue forms a moderately dense, upright turf with a medium-coarse texture. Unmowed, it can reach 2 to 4 feet in height, but when maintained as a lawn, it is typically kept at 2 to 3.5 inches. Color ranges from medium to dark green, with good wear resistance and deep root systems that help it stay green longer into summer droughts.
Blade Characteristics
Medium-coarse blades (2-4 mm wide) with pointed tips, prominent parallel veins on the upper surface, and smooth, glossy undersides. Vernation is rolled in the bud. Ligule is a very short membrane, and auricles are small, blunt, or absent.
Root System
Exceptionally deep root system (often 2 to 3 feet or more), which gives it superior drought tolerance compared to other cool-season grasses. Moderate establishment speed from seed, and it develops a moderately thick sod.

Native to Europe and parts of North Africa and Asia; widely cultivated and naturalized across North America, particularly the transition zone and cooler regions.

Primarily bunch-type (clump-forming), though modern turf-types can have very short rhizomes that help with modest self-repair and density.
Sunlight & Water Needs
Performs best in full sun to partial shade (more shade tolerant than Kentucky bluegrass or bermudagrass). Requires moderate watering once established; high drought tolerance due to deep roots. Prefers well-drained loamy soils with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5.
Mowing & Maintenance
Ideal mowing height is 2.5 to 3.5 inches, never cut below 2 inches. Mowing frequency is weekly during peak spring and fall growth. Requires moderate fertilization (2 to 4 lbs N per 1000 sq ft per year). Moderate maintenance level.
Special Characteristics
High traffic and wear tolerance, good drought recovery, moderate-to-good shade tolerance, and good resistance to many common turf diseases. Can tolerate occasional temporary waterlogging. Competes well with weeds due to its dense bunch growth.
