About This Grass
Tall fescue forms a moderately coarse, dense turf with a deep green color. It typically grows to a height of 2 to 4 feet if left unmowed, but is maintained at 2 to 3.5 inches in lawns. It exhibits good drought tolerance due to deep roots and maintains its green color longer into the summer and winter than many other cool-season grasses.
Blade Characteristics
Blades are medium-to-coarse in width (4-6 mm), flat with prominent parallel veins on the upper surface and smooth underneath. Tip is pointed. Vernation is rolled in the bud. Ligule is a very short membranous ring, and auricles are absent or blunt.
Root System
Extremely deep root system (often reaching 2 to 4 feet into the soil), fibrous, with moderate thatch-forming tendencies. Establishes relatively quickly from seed compared to Kentucky bluegrass.
