About This Grass
Forms a moderately dense, upright turf with a medium-to-coarse texture. Unmowed, it can reach heights of 2 to 4 feet, but maintained lawns are typically kept between 2.5 and 4 inches. Color ranges from medium to dark green and remains green longer into the winter than many other cool-season grasses. Seed heads are open panicles.
Blade Characteristics
Medium-to-coarse width (4-8mm), flat with prominent parallel veins on the upper surface giving it a ribbed appearance. Leaf tips are pointed. Vernation is rolled in the bud. The auricles are small and blunt (or absent), and the ligule is a very short, membranous collar.
Root System
Exceptionally deep root system (often extending 2 to 3 feet or more into the soil), fibrous, moderate to fast establishment speed, low thatch-form tendency. This deep root system provides superior drought tolerance compared to most other cool-season grasses.
