Grass Category

Invasive/Weed Grass, Ornamental, Erosion Control (incidental)

About This Grass

An upright or decumbent grass reaching 15-40 inches. It is most recognizable by its fluffy, reddish-pink to rose-colored feathery panicles that turn silvery-white as they age. Stems are slender and often branched at the base.

Blade Characteristics

Blades are 2-5mm wide, flat or slightly folded, linear, and tapering to a fine point. Color is a light to medium green, sometimes with reddish tints at the margins. Ligule is a fringe of hairs; auricles are absent.

Root System

Fibrous and relatively shallow. It establishes quickly from seed but does not form a dense sod or significant thatch; easy to pull manually.

Growing Information

Origin Region

Native to Southern Africa; naturalized across tropical/subtropical Americas, Australia, and Hawaii

Growth Habit

Bunch-type, slightly decumbent, sometimes rooting at the lower nodes (weakly stoloniferous)

Sunlight & Water Needs

Full Sun (highly light-demanding). High drought tolerance; thrives in disturbed, sandy, or rocky soils with low moisture and neutral to acidic pH.

Mowing & Maintenance

Not traditionally mowed. Low maintenance if used ornamentally, though it requires frequent removal if treated as a weed. Responds to disturbance with rapid seeding.

Special Characteristics

Excellent salt tolerance and colonizing ability in poor soils. High seed production. Distinctive pink inflorescence is its primary identification feature.

Ecological Information

Introduced/Invasive in many regions. It outcompetes native grasses following fires or soil disturbance. Provides minimal wildlife food value but can provide cover for small insects/reptiles in barren areas.
