Fine Fescue (Chewings Fescue)

Festuca rubra subsp. commutata · Cool-season, Perennial, C3

Fine Fescue (Chewings Fescue)

Grass Family

Poaceae, Pooideae

Grass Category

Lawn/Turf Grass, Ornamental Grass

Variety / Cultivar

Standard Chewings Fescue (often found in 'Shade Mixes')

Hardiness Zones

USDA Zones 3-7; high cold tolerance but poor heat tolerance in deep South (non-transition zones).

About This Grass

Fine-textured grass with needle-like blades. In the image, it appears as thin, upright green shoots emerging from a base of dormant brown thatch and encroaching moss. Unmowed, it grows 6-12 inches high with drooping, graceful blades and panicle seed heads.

Blade Characteristics

Fine width (<1.5mm), needle-like, folded or rolled, sharply pointed tip, deep green to grayish-green color, folded vernation, very short/minute ligule, no auricles, and a narrow, indistinct collar.

Root System

Fibrous and dense but relatively shallow compared to Tall Fescue. Low thatch tendency if managed, but very slow establishment speed from seed.

Growing Information

Origin Region

Native to Europe and naturalized throughout temperate North America and cool-climate regions.

Growth Habit

Bunch-type growth habit forming dense, tufted clumps; lacks rhizomes unlike its relative, Strong Creeping Red Fescue.

Sunlight & Water Needs

Exceptional shade tolerance (2-4 hours direct sun); low to moderate water needs. High drought tolerance through dormancy but prefers well-drained, acidic soils (pH 5.5-6.5).

Mowing & Maintenance

Ideal height 2.5-3.5 inches; low fertilization needs (1-2 lbs N per 1000 sq ft/year). Low maintenance level as it grows slowly and requires less frequent mowing than bluegrass.

Special Characteristics

Best-in-class shade tolerance; excellent salt tolerance. Poor traffic/wear tolerance; susceptible to Summer Patch and Dollar Spot in high humidity.

Ecological Information

Introduced species used for low-input sustainable lawns. Provides cover for small insects but has low forage value. Often mixed with Creeping Red Fescue and Hard Fescue for diverse shade-tolerant lawn blends.
