Tall Fescue
Festuca arundinacea (syn. Schedonorus arundinaceus) · Cool-season, Perennial, C3 carbon fixation; well-adapted to the Transition Zone.

Grass Family
Poaceae, subfamily Pooideae, tribe Poeae
Grass Category
Lawn/Turf Grass; highly utilized for residential lawns and low-maintenance utility areas.
Variety / Cultivar
Turf-Type Tall Fescue (TTTF) blend; likely includes modern cultivars like 'Rebel', 'Falcon', or 'Titan' based on the medium-fine texture and dark green color.
Hardiness Zones
USDA Zones 4-7; highly heat-tolerant for a cool-season grass, staying green longer into summer and resistant to winter-kill in cold climates.
About This Grass
A dense, bunching cool-season grass with a deep green color. When maintained, it forms a durable, uniform surface. If left unmowed, it can reach 3-4 feet with open panicle seed heads. Texture is medium to coarse compared to fine fescues but much finer than older forage-type fescues like 'Kentucky 31'.
Blade Characteristics
Blade width is medium (3-4mm); shape is flat with a distinctly pointed tip and prominent longitudinal veins on the upper surface. Vernation is rolled in the bud. The ligule is a short, continuous membrane; auricles are small or absent (short ciliate); the collar is broad and conspicuous.
Root System
Exceptionally deep fibrous root system (often 2-3 feet deep once established), providing superior drought resistance. Low thatch tendency; moderate establishment speed; does not form a tight sod like rhizomatous grasses.
Growing Information
Origin Region
Native to Europe and North Africa; widely naturalized throughout North America, particularly in the U.S. Transition Zone and Mid-Atlantic.
Growth Habit
Bunch-type (clump-forming). It spreads primarily by tillering; modern turf-type varieties may exhibit very short, weak rhizomes but lack the aggressive spreading of Kentucky Bluegrass.
Sunlight & Water Needs
Adapts to Full Sun to Partial Shade (min 4-6 hours direct light). Requires moderate watering (1 inch per week). Possesses high drought tolerance for a cool-season grass due to root depth. Prefers well-drained soil with pH 5.5 to 7.5.
Mowing & Maintenance
Ideal mowing height is 3 to 4 inches to maintain root health. Frequency is weekly during peak growth seasons. Requires 2-4 lbs Nitrogen per 1000 sq ft annually. Low to medium maintenance; periodic overseeding is required to fill in bare spots due to its bunch-type growth habit.
Special Characteristics
Excellent wear tolerance and traffic recovery; high resistance to Brown Patch and Pythium in modern cultivars. Moderate salt tolerance. Best grass for high-traffic transition zone lawns where Bluegrass fails due to heat.
Ecological Information
Introduced/Naturalized in North America. Provides soil stabilization on slopes due to deep roots. Lower invasive potential than rhizomatous grasses. Often blended with 5-10% Kentucky Bluegrass to improve sod-knitting and self-repair capabilities.
