Tall Fescue is a coarse-textured, bunch-forming cool-season grass with a vibrant medium-to-dark green color. It maintains a relatively upright growth habit and can grow up to 2-4 feet if left unmowed, but is typically maintained at 2-3 inches. It forms a dense turf when seeded heavily and features prominent fibrous root systems.
Blade Characteristics
Blades are medium-to-coarse in width (4-8mm), flat with prominent parallel veins on the upper surface, and have pointed tips. Vernation is rolled in the bud. The ligule is a very short membranous ring, and auricles are absent or blunt. The collar is distinct and broad.
Root System
Features a deep, extensive fibrous root system going down 2-3 feet or more, contributing to exceptional drought tolerance for a cool-season grass. Establishes relatively quickly from seed, has moderate thatch-forming tendencies, and forms a strong, durable sod.
