About This Grass

A dark green, bunch-type grass with a shiny leaf underside. Fast-growing and forms a dense turf when seeded thickly. It is often used for overseeding due to its rapid germination. Seed heads are long spikes with awnless spikelets.

Blade Characteristics

Fine to medium width (2-4mm), folded vernation in the bud, pointed tip, shiny underside with prominent midrib, small/short membranous ligule, and small auricles.

Root System

Fibrous, shallow to moderate depth; lacks rhizomes or stolons; low thatch tendency; very high establishment speed.

Growing Information

Origin Region

Europe, Asia, and North Africa; widely naturalized in North America and temperate regions.

Growth Habit

Bunch-type (clump-forming); non-spreading but very fast establishment rate.

Sunlight & Water Needs

Full sun preferred but moderate shade tolerance; high water needs; moderate drought tolerance and requires supplemental irrigation during heat.

Mowing & Maintenance

1.5 to 2.5 inches; high frequency during peak spring/fall; 2-4 lbs N per 1000 sq ft per year; low dethatching needs; high maintenance.

Special Characteristics

Exceptional wear tolerance for high-traffic areas; high disease susceptibility (Gray Leaf Spot, Pythium); excellent for striping lawns due to light reflection on shiny blades.

Ecological Information

Introduced in North America; provides forage for livestock and seeds for birds; used for erosion control due to fast germination; often mixed with Kentucky Bluegrass for diverse turf.
