Tall Fescue
Festuca arundinacea (syn. Schedonorus arundinaceus) · Cool-season, Perennial, C3 grass

Grass Family
Poaceae, Subfamily Pooideae, Tribe Poeae
Grass Category
Lawn/Turf Grass, Sports Turf, Erosion Control
Variety / Cultivar
Turf-Type Tall Fescue (TTTF); potentially a variety like 'Rebel IV' or 'Falcon IV' based on the medium-fine texture and deep green color shown.
Hardiness Zones
USDA Zones 4-7; highly successful in the Transition Zone. Excellent heat tolerance for a cool-season grass; stays green longer in winter than warm-season grasses but may experience some leaf tip burn in extreme cold.
About This Grass
A robust, deep-rooted cool-season grass with a dense growth habit. It maintains a rich green color throughout the year in many climates. When unmowed, it grows in tall clumps with open panicle seed heads; as a lawn, it forms a durable, medium-textured carpet.
Blade Characteristics
Blade width is medium (3-4mm), flat with prominent longitudinal veins on the upper surface and a dull underside. Tips are distinctly pointed (not boat-shaped). Vernation is rolled in the bud. Ligule is short and membranous; auricles are typically small, rudimentary, and may have short hairs (ciliate).
Root System
Deep fibrous root system (reaching 2-3 feet), which provides superior drought tolerance compared to other cool-season grasses. It does not produce significant thatch and establishes relatively quickly from seed.
Growing Information
Origin Region
Native to Europe and North Africa; widely naturalized in North America, specifically in the Transition Zone and Northern regions.
Growth Habit
Primarily Bunch-type (clump-forming). Some newer cultivars have limited rhizomatous activity (RTF), but it generally lacks aggressive lateral spread, requiring overseeding to maintain density.
Sunlight & Water Needs
Full sun to moderate shade (best shade tolerance among cool-season turf grasses). Requires moderate watering but survives dry spells by going semi-dormant. Prefers well-drained soil with pH 5.5-7.5.
Mowing & Maintenance
Ideal height 2.5 to 4.0 inches. Higher cuts encourage deeper roots. Requires 2-4 lbs of Nitrogen/1000 sq ft annually. Low to medium maintenance; requires periodic core aeration and annual overseeding to fill gaps.
Special Characteristics
High wear and traffic tolerance due to tough vascular tissue. Resistant to many common turf diseases like dollar spot, though susceptible to Brown Patch in high humidity. Excellent for home lawns with pets or high foot traffic.
Ecological Information
Introduced species in North America. Provides excellent soil stabilization due to root depth. Large-scale pasture varieties often contain endophytes (fungi) that protect the plant but can be toxic to livestock; however, turf-type varieties use these endophytes to increase insect and stress resistance.
