About This Grass
A rapid-growing, light green to medium green grass with a glossy appearance. It grows upright in distinct clumps, reaching 1 to 3 feet if left unmowed. It is known for its high luster and coarse texture.
Blade Characteristics
Blades are 4-10mm wide (coarse), flat, with a sharp-pointed tip. Color is bright green with a highly glossy/shiny underside. Vernation is rolled in the bud. Ligule is membranous (0.5-2mm long), and auricles are prominent and clasping.
Root System
Fibrous and relatively shallow (mostly in the top 6-10 inches). High establishment speed with no thatch tendency. Limited drought tolerance due to shallow roots but good for initial soil stabilization.
Growing Information
Origin Region
Southern Europe; widely naturalized in temperate regions worldwide
Growth Habit
Bunch-type (clump-forming), rapid vertical growth, non-spreading
Sunlight & Water Needs
Full sun preferred; moderate shade tolerance. High water requirements; poor drought tolerance. Prefers moist, fertile soils with pH 6.0-7.0.
Mowing & Maintenance
Mowing height: 2.0-4.0 inches. High frequency needed due to rapid growth. 2-4 lbs Nitrogen per 1000 sq ft/year. Low to Medium maintenance; usually dies out in summer heat.
Special Characteristics
Excellent wear tolerance during cool months; very fast germination (5-7 days). Used for winter overseeding of warm-season lawns and quick erosion control. Susceptible to Gray Leaf Spot and Pythium Blight.
Ecological Information
Introduced/Naturalized; high forage value for livestock. Can become a weed in cereal crops or winter wheat. Often used as a nurse grass for permanent cool-season mixes.
