Grass Family

Poaceae, Pooideae, Tribe Poeae

Grass Category

Lawn/Turf, Pasture/Forage, and Erosion Control grass

Variety / Cultivar

Common / Viterseed variety

Hardiness Zones

USDA Zones 6-9 (as an annual); sensitive to extreme heat and prolonged freezing; goes dormant or dies in high summer heat.

About This Grass

A vigorous, bright green grass that grows in upright clumps. It is known for extremely rapid germination and establishment. It has a shiny, waxy appearance on the leaf undersides and can grow 12-36 inches tall if unmowed.

Blade Characteristics

Medium width (3-7mm), flat shape, pointed tip, bright green color with high gloss on the underside, rolled vernation in the bud, prominent veins on upper surface, large claw-like auricles, and a short membranous ligule.

Root System

Fibrous and relatively shallow; lacks rhizomes or stolons but forms a very dense root mass quickly, providing excellent initial erosion control but poor long-term drought recovery.

Growing Information

Origin Region

Native to Europe, North Africa, and temperate Asia; naturalized worldwide in temperate zones

Growth Habit

Bunch-type (clumping), fast-growing, non-rhizomatous

Sunlight & Water Needs

Full sun to partial shade; requires high moisture and frequent watering but does not tolerate standing water; prefers fertile, loamy soils with pH 5.5-7.5.

Mowing & Maintenance

Ideal height 1.5-3.0 inches; requires frequent mowing due to rapid growth; low to medium maintenance; often used for temporary winter overseeding only.

Special Characteristics

Excellent wear tolerance during its peak growth; very high germination speed; used as a 'nurse grass' in mixes; poor heat and drought tolerance compared to perennials.

Ecological Information

Introduced species; high forage value for livestock; provides quick ground cover to prevent soil erosion; can become a weed in grain crops or natural areas if allowed to seed.
