About This Grass
An annual grass with a sprawling, delicate habit. Grows up to 2 to 3 feet in height when stems elevate, though often leaning or decumbent. Light to medium green color with a pale midvein. Texture is very soft and fine to medium. Produces slender spike-like racemes with tiny spikelets in late summer.
Blade Characteristics
Blades are flat, relatively short (1 to 3 inches long), and lance-shaped with a width typically ranging from 4 to 15 mm. Distinct off-center silver-white midvein on the upper surface. Vernation is rolled. Ligule is a short, membranous fringe of hairs. Auricles are absent.
Root System
Shallow, fibrous root system with weak anchoring. Can establish quickly from seed in disturbed soils. Forms loose patches rather than a tight, durable turf sod.

Native to tropical and temperate Asia (China, Japan, Korea, India); widely naturalized and invasive throughout the eastern and southeastern United States.
Growth Habit
Stoloniferous and branching; roots at the nodes when touching the ground, forming loose to dense mats or sprawling clumps.
Sunlight & Water Needs
Highly shade tolerant, but also grows well in full sun. Thrives in moist, damp soils and tolerates occasional flooding, but has low drought tolerance and wilts quickly in dry conditions. Prefers acidic to neutral soils.
Mowing & Maintenance
Not maintained as a traditional turfgrass; often controlled via mechanical pulling, mowing before seed set in late summer, or selective herbicides. High maintenance as an invasive weed.
Special Characteristics
Extremely low traffic and wear tolerance. Highly invasive, particularly in forested understories, floodplains, and damp paths. Outcompetes native vegetation due to high seed production and dense mat formation.
Ecological Information
