About This Grass
A fine-textured, low-growing grass with a needle-like appearance. It typically reaches 6 to 12 inches when unmowed, forming soft, dense tufts. The color is a deep blue-green to grayish-green that remains consistent through the season. Seed heads are narrow panicles emerging in early summer.
Blade Characteristics
Fine width (<1.5mm), needle-like, folded or involute shape. Pointed tips; dark green to grayish-green color. Vernation is folded in the bud. Ligule is a very short, inconspicuous membrane; auricles are absent.
Root System
Moderately deep and fibrous. Low thatch tendency compared to spreading grasses. Slow establishment speed but excellent for soil stabilization once mature.
Growing Information
Origin Region
Native to Europe and temperate Asia; naturalized across North America
Growth Habit
Bunch-type (clump-forming) with very limited rhizomatous activity and slow spread
Sunlight & Water Needs
Partial sun to shade (highly shade tolerant); requires 2-4 hours of sun. Low water needs; high drought tolerance once established. Prefers well-drained, acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5-7.0).
Mowing & Maintenance
Ideal height is 2.5-4.0 inches, or left 'No-Mow' for a meadow look. Low mowing frequency. Low fertilization (1-2 lbs N per 1000 sq ft per year). Maintenance level is low.
Special Characteristics
Superior shade tolerance, high salt tolerance, and high drought resistance. Poor traffic/wear tolerance; best for low-traffic ornamental or shaded areas.
Ecological Information
Introduced status in NA; provides cover for small wildlife and stabilizes slopes. Often used in 'Bee Lawns' or low-input ecofriendly mixes to reduce water and chemical usage.
