Tall Fescue
Festuca arundinacea (syn. Schedonorus arundinaceus) · Cool-season, Perennial, C3 grass

Grass Family
Poaceae, subfamily Pooideae, tribe Poeae
Grass Category
Lawn/Turf, Pasture, and Erosion Control
Variety / Cultivar
Turf-Type Tall Fescue (TTTF), likely a modern dark green cultivar such as "Titan Ltd" or "Falcon V"
Hardiness Zones
USDA Hardiness Zones 4-7; particularly well-suited for the Transition Zone. Excellent heat tolerance compared to other cool-season grasses; remains green into early winter but can go dormant in extreme cold or heat/drought.
About This Grass
A robust, deep-rooted cool-season grass known for its durability. It has a bunchy growth form, maintaining a dark green color even under moderate stress. Unmowed, it can reach 2-4 feet, but as turf, it presents a medium-dense, upright appearance with clearly visible individual clumps if not seeded heavily.
Blade Characteristics
Blade width is medium-coarse (approx. 3-5mm). Shape is flat with a distinct pointed tip and prominent longitudinal ribs (veins) on the upper surface. The underside is smooth and shiny. Vernation is rolled in the bud. The ligule is a short, continuous membrane; auricles are small, blunt, and short-hairy; the collar is broad and distinct.
Root System
Deep fibrous root system, often reaching 2-3 feet or more in depth. Slow thatch producer. Deep roots provide excellent drought tolerance for a cool-season grass but the lack of strong rhizomes makes recovery from heavy traffic/thinning slow.
Growing Information
Origin Region
Native to Europe and North Africa; widely naturalized in North America, particularly in the Transition Zone and Northern regions.
Growth Habit
Bunch-type (clump-forming) with limited short rhizomes; forms a dense canopy but does not spread aggressively sideways.
Sunlight & Water Needs
Adapts well to Full Sun to Partial Shade (min. 4-6 hours direct sun). High drought tolerance once established due to root depth. Prefers well-drained soil with a pH of 5.5 to 7.5.
Mowing & Maintenance
Ideal mowing height is 3.0 to 4.0 inches. Mowing frequency is moderate. Fertilization: 2-4 lbs N per 1000 sq ft annually. Low to medium maintenance; requires periodic overseeding because it does not spread via runners.
Special Characteristics
High wear tolerance for foot traffic; good resistance to Brown Patch and Leaf Spot (in modern cultivars); better shade tolerance than Kentucky Bluegrass; excellent erosion control.
Ecological Information
Introduced species in North America. Provides cover for small mammals and birds. Highly effective for soil stabilization on slopes. Often mixed with 10% Kentucky Bluegrass to improve sod density and self-repair capabilities.
