About This Grass
Forms a moderately dense, coarse-textured turf with an upright growth habit. Medium to dark green color that is retained well into winter. Leaf blades are relatively wide and rough-edged. Unmowed height can reach 2 to 4 feet, producing open, panicle-type seed heads.
Blade Characteristics
Blades are medium-to-wide (4-8mm), flat with prominent parallel veins on the upper surface, and rough margins. Tips are pointed. Vernation is rolled in the bud. The ligule is a short membranous fringe, and auricles are small, blunt, and clasping.
Root System
Deep, extensive fibrous root system reaching depths of 2 to 3 feet or more. Low to moderate thatch-forming tendency. Establishes relatively quickly from seed, providing excellent drought avoidance and good wear recovery.
