About This Grass
Forms a moderately dense, upright turf with medium-coarse texture. Unmowed height reaches 2-4 feet with open, panicle-type seed heads, but is typically maintained at 2-3 inches. Medium to dark green color with good year-round color retention in moderate climates.
Blade Characteristics
Medium to coarse width (3-6mm), flat shape with prominent parallel veins on the upper surface and a shiny underside. Tips are pointed. Vernation is rolled in the bud. Ligule is a very short membrane, auricles are blunt and clasping (often described as ear-like or absent in some descriptions, but characteristically blunt when present), and the collar is broad and distinct.
Root System
Deep, extensive fibrous root system reaching depths of 2-3 feet or more. Moderate thatch-forming tendency, medium-fast establishment from seed. Provides superior drought avoidance due to deep rooting, and forms a strong, durable sod despite being a bunchgrass.
