About This Grass
An upright, tall, perennial bunchgrass reaching heights of 3 to 6 feet (or up to 8 feet in optimal conditions). Features blue-green to green foliage in summer that turns bright yellow to beige in autumn. At maturity, it produces large, open, airy, cloud-like panicle seed heads that shimmer in the wind.
Blade Characteristics
Medium to coarse blades, generally 4-15 mm wide, flat with pointed tips, blue-green to medium green color, rolled in the bud (vernation). Features a prominent hairy ligule instead of a membranous one, with no auricles.
Root System
Deep, extensive fibrous root system going down 5 to 10 feet or more into the soil. Very rapid establishment from seed relative to some native prairie grasses, forming a strong root mass that provides exceptional drought resistance.

Origin Region
Native to central and eastern North America, widely distributed from the Rocky Mountains to the Atlantic coast and from Canada down into Mexico.
Growth Habit
Bunch-type with short rhizomes, forming clumps that slowly expand to create colonies over time.
Sunlight & Water Needs
Requires full sun (at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight) for best growth and upright form. Moderate water needs once established, highly drought-tolerant due to deep roots. Adapts to a wide range of soils from sandy to heavy clay, with preferred pH between 5.5 and 7.5.
Mowing & Maintenance
Not traditionally used for turf, so it is rarely mown. Maintained as an ornamental or prairie grass by cutting it down to 4-6 inches in late winter or early spring before new green growth emerges. Low maintenance overall.
Special Characteristics
Exceptional drought and flood tolerance, strong resistance to lodging when established, moderate to good wildlife cover, high erosion control capabilities on slopes and riverbanks, and moderate salt tolerance.
Ecological Information
Native species playing a critical role in tallgrass prairie ecosystems. Provides essential nesting cover and food (seeds) for upland birds and waterfowl. Excellent for soil stabilization, carbon sequestration, and stormwater management.
