Fine Fescue (specifically Creeping Red Fescue)
Festuca rubra subsp. rubra · Cool-season (C3), Perennial

Grass Family
Poaceae, Pooideae, tribe Poeae
Grass Category
Lawn/Turf Grass, Ornamental, Erosion Control
Variety / Cultivar
Creeping Red Fescue (generalized); resembles 'Pennlawn' or 'Boreal' types known for their dense, fine-textured spreading habit.
Hardiness Zones
USDA Zones 3-7; excellent cold tolerance and winter hardiness; poor heat tolerance (struggles in the deep south US).
About This Grass
A very fine-textured, needle-like grass with a soft, flowing appearance. It often forms a 'floppy' or 'wavy' look when left unmowed, typically reaching heights of 6-15 inches. It displays a deep green to grayish-green color and maintains good color in shaded or cool conditions.
Blade Characteristics
Extremely fine width (<1.5mm), needle-like or bristle-like; folded vernation; pointed tips; deep green color with prominent veins on the underside. Ligule is short and membranous; auricles are absent.
Root System
Fibrous and rhizomatous root system of moderate depth; produces moderate thatch; slow to medium establishment speed. The rhizomes provide better sod-forming capability than other fine fescues like Sheep Fescue.
Growing Information
Origin Region
Native to Europe and parts of Asia and North America; widely adapted to temperate climates globally.
Growth Habit
Rhizomatous and Bunch-type; spreads via short underground rhizomes which allow it to form a dense, knit mat over time, though slower than bluegrass.
Sunlight & Water Needs
Partial Sun to heavy Shade; requires 2-4 hours of sun but is one of the most shade-tolerant turfgrasses. Low watering needs once established; high drought tolerance but goes dormant during extreme heat and lack of water. Prefers acidic to neutral, well-drained soils.
Mowing & Maintenance
Ideal mowing height: 2.5–3.5 inches; low frequency; low fertilization requirements (1-2 lbs N per 1,000 sq ft annually); high dethatching need due to rhizome matting; low overall maintenance level.
Special Characteristics
Excellent shade tolerance; moderate wear tolerance (though recovery is slow); good salt tolerance; high disease resistance to Red Thread but susceptible to summer patch and leaf spot in high humidity.
Ecological Information
Introduced and naturalized in many regions; provides cover for small mammals; excellent for stabilizing slopes and banks due to rhizomatous mat; often used in 'no-mow' seed mixes and shade blends with Kentucky Bluegrass.
