About This Grass
Tall Fescue forms a relatively coarse, upright, and dense turf stand. When unmowed, it can grow up to 2-4 feet tall, but when maintained, it forms a deep green, uniform lawn. Texture is medium-coarse compared to Kentucky bluegrass. It retains its green color well into the autumn and winter.
Blade Characteristics
Blades are medium-coarse (4-8mm wide), flat to slightly folded, with pointed tips. Color ranges from medium to dark green. Vernation is rolled in the bud. The leaf underside is glossy, while the upper surface is ribbed. Ligule is a very short membrane, auricles are small and blunt (bluff-eared/claw-like clasping), and the collar is broad and continuous.
Root System
Extremely deep root system (often reaching 2-3 feet or more), which gives it superior drought tolerance compared to most other cool-season grasses. Forms a moderately dense sod, establishes fairly quickly from seed, and has low-to-moderate thatch-forming tendencies.
