About This Grass
Forms dense, upright clumps of medium to dark green foliage. When unmowed, it can grow up to 2-4 feet tall, but when maintained as a lawn it forms a relatively uniform, medium-textured turf. Leaves have prominent parallel veins and a slightly rough texture. Seed heads are open, branching panicles.
Blade Characteristics
Blades are medium-coarse in width (4-6 mm), flat with prominent veins on the upper surface and a shiny underside. Tip is pointed. Vernation is rolled in the bud. Ligule is a short membranous collar with small auricles often absent or blunt.
Root System
Deep, extensive fibrous root system going down 2-3 feet or more, which provides superior drought tolerance compared to most other cool-season grasses. Moderate establishment speed, low thatch-forming tendency.
