About This Grass
Tall Fescue is a deep-rooted, coarse-to-medium-textured bunchgrass that grows in dense clumps. It features bright to medium-dark green color, high wear tolerance, and upright growth habit. Unmowed, it can reach heights of 2 to 4 feet, but forms an attractive lawn when maintained at 2 to 3.5 inches.
Blade Characteristics
Blades are medium-to-wide (4-8mm), flat with prominent parallel veins on the upper surface and a shiny underside. Vernation is rolled in the bud. Tips are pointed. Ligule is a very short membrane, and auricles are absent or blunt/rounded.
Root System
Extremely deep root system (often reaching 2 to 4 feet into the soil), providing superior drought avoidance. Establishes relatively quickly from seed, has low-to-moderate thatch-forming tendency, and forms a strong, dense sod over time.
