Switchgrass
Panicum virgatum · Warm-season, Perennial, C4

Grass Family
Poaceae, subfamily Panicoideae, tribe Paniceae
Grass Category
Ornamental, Native Prairie, Forage/Pasture, and Erosion Control
Variety / Cultivar
Likely a wild-type or a common meadow cultivar like 'Shenandoah' or 'Northwind'
Hardiness Zones
USDA Zones 3-9. Highly heat and cold tolerant. Goes dormant (turns tan/gold) after the first hard frost.
About This Grass
A tall, robust perennial with a stiff, upright habit. It typically grows 3 to 6 feet tall. In the photo, it exhibits a bright green color with misty, airy inflorescence. The seed heads are large, open panicles that create a cloud-like appearance over the foliage.
Blade Characteristics
Medium to coarse blades (3-15mm wide), flat, with a prominent midrib. Tips are pointed. Color ranges from bright green to bluish-green. Ligule is a fringe of hairs; auricles are absent. Vernation is rolled.
Root System
Extremely deep and fibrous root system, often reaching 10 feet or more. Highly rhizomatous which contributes to drought tolerance and high erosion control efficiency. Moderate thatch/litter layer.
Growing Information
Origin Region
Native to North America, primarily the tallgrass prairies of the central and eastern United States and parts of Canada.
Growth Habit
Bunch-type/Clump-forming with short, slowly spreading rhizomes. Can form large, dense colonies over time.
Sunlight & Water Needs
Full Sun (minimum 6 hours). Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant but performs best in moist to medium soils. Adapts to varied soil pH from sandy to heavy clay.
Mowing & Maintenance
Usually not mown like turf; if used as ornamental, cut back to 3-6 inches in late winter or early spring. Low maintenance; requires little to no fertilization (0-1 lb N/1000 sq ft).
Special Characteristics
High salt tolerance, excellent wind resistance, high drought and heat tolerance. Generally disease and pest resistant. Excellent for wildlife cover and nesting. Used for biofuel production due to high biomass.
Ecological Information
Native species and a dominant component of the North American tallgrass prairie. Provides high-quality habitat and seeds for birds and small mammals. Effective at sequestering carbon and stabilizing soil in riparian buffers.
