About This Grass
Tall Fescue is a deep-rooted, coarse to medium-textured bunchgrass with high durability. Unmowed, it can reach heights of 2 to 4 feet, but when maintained as a lawn, it is typically kept between 2 and 3.5 inches. Its color is medium to dark green, maintaining its color longer into the winter than many other cool-season grasses.
Blade Characteristics
Blades are medium to coarse in width (2-6 mm), flat with prominent parallel veins on the upper surface and a shiny underside. Tip is pointed. Vernation is rolled in the bud. Ligule is a very short membrane, and auricles are absent (blunt/rounded auricle-like lobes may sometimes appear reddish).
Root System
Exceptionally deep root system, often reaching 2 to 3 feet or more into the soil profile. Fibrous and robust, providing superior drought avoidance and good wear recovery, though low thatch-forming tendency.
