About This Grass
Forms dense, fine to medium-textured clumps of dark green, glossy grass. Grows rapidly from seed, with height reaching 12 to 24 inches if left unmowed. Shows a distinct glossy underside on leaves.
Blade Characteristics
Medium-fine blades (2-4mm wide), folded in the bud (vernation), pointed tips, dark green color with a very shiny underside, prominent veins on the upper surface, medium-sized membranous ligule, and small auricles.
Root System
Fibrous, moderately deep root system with a fast establishment rate. Does not produce thatch quickly. Recovery from wear is slow due to the bunch-type habit, requiring overseeding for bare patches.

Sunlight & Water Needs
Requires full sun to partial shade (minimum 4-6 hours of direct sun). Moderate to high water needs; moderate drought tolerance as it goes dormant under severe stress, preferring moist, well-draining soils.
Mowing & Maintenance
Mowing height between 1.5 and 2.5 inches. High maintenance requirement with frequent mowing due to rapid vertical growth. Requires regular fertilization (3-5 lbs N per 1000 sq ft annually) and regular overseeding.
Special Characteristics
High traffic and wear tolerance initially, but poor self-repair. Excellent disease resistance to many patch diseases, quick germination and establishment speed making it ideal for rapid erosion control and sports turf mixtures.
Ecological Information
Introduced species widely naturalized in North America. Provides good ground cover and soil stabilization, often blended with Kentucky bluegrass and fine fescues for balanced lawn durability.
